FAQs
Can I make my own travel arrangements (airfare)?
Yes, if you prefer to book airfare yourself, please let us know. We will then deduct the airfare cost from the price of the tour. Also, if you plan on traveling from a different destination to Budapest or to travel elsewhere after the tour, our agent will be happy to make those travel arrangements for you.
Can I upgrade my ticket to business class?
Yes, it is possible to upgrade either by using frequent flier miles or to buy an upgrade. Please contact us if you'd like to do so.
Do I need a visa to visit Hungary?
No, all you will need is a valid passport. American, Canadian and EU passport holders can stay in Hungary for up to 90 days without a visa, as long as the passport is valid for at least three months beyond the visit.
Why is there a supplement for a single-room?
The cost of hotel rooms is based on double-occupancy, so the same room costs more if it used by a single traveler. If you would like to have a room by yourself, you will need to let us know while making your booking.
Is the Tour All-Inclusive?
Almost. The price of the tour includes airfare, all transportation, admission fees to any place we will visit, hotel (with a spa treatment), breakfast and dinner. On some days, when we don't have an organized program, you will be responsible for your lunch. Other than that everything else in the program is included.
Do I have to participate in all programs?
No. They are optional (although included in the tour price) and should you prefer to make your own plans, you are welcome to do so. We would encourage you to take advantage of the programs, because they will provide you with access to sites that you would not be able to visit by yourself.
Do you provide travel insurance?
No. You need to arrange your own travel insurance, should you want one. Travel insurance, including medical, cancellation and baggage insurance, or 'any reason' insurance is recommended. Travelers are encouraged to use their regular insurance providers and check insurance benefits offered through their credit cards, employer programs, etc.
What currency does Hungary use?
Although Hungary is a member of the European Union, it has not converted its currency to euro yet. Hungarian Forint is the currency and the current exchange rate is about 200 HUF to 1 USD. For any purchases you may want to make in Budapest, you will be able to pay with a US credit card. Also, most ATMs will allow you to withdraw cash from your US bank account (they all have screen instructions in English). There are also numerous currency exchange places around Budapest (including at the airport and hotels, although these always have the worst exchange rates).
What weather should I expect?
Generally, Budapest has similar weather to NY, although Spring and Fall tend to be a bit warmer. For up-to-date weather information please visit the WEATHER section of our website.
Language and communication:
The Hungarian language is completely incomprehensible to foreigners (but kind of fun to listen to). But, most young people speak English and older generation will have a basic command of German. Our tour will be accompanied by a local host who will be fluent in English.
Is there a dress code for the tour?
Not really. You should wear whatever you are comfortable in. Some guests like to 'dress up' for dinner, as we will be eating at some grand restaurants.
Is Budapest a safe city?
The answer is a definite yes. At the same time it is a city of over 2 million people, so you should make the same common sense precautions as you would do in any other cosmopolitan area.
Tips:
Usually 10% of the price, but some restaurants automatically add the service fee. So before you give a tip, you may want to check the bill or ask the waiter.
How much luggage can I bring?
Luggage allocations and the permissibility of certain items are under the jurisdiction of individual airlines, though experienced travellers limit themselves to one checked bag and one carry-on per person. Be sure to check the allowances and restrictions for your carrier. Most airlines now have strict limitations for carry-on baggage including limitations on quantities of liquids or gels to 3 ounces each. Remember to put any important items and your travel documents in your carry-on bag.
Safeguarding Valuables & Personal Belongings:
Breakable items, medical prescriptions in their original containers with the prescription label affixed, and other valuables should always be packed in the traveler's carry-on luggage. NEVER pack travel documents, valuables, credit cards, or medication in checked luggage on an airline. Safe deposit box will be available in your hotel room.
How early should I make a reservation?
We always suggest making reservations as early as possible after the trip information is available. Some trips sell out very quickly, while others do not always fill to capacity. But it is impossible to predict how quickly a trip will sell out so the longer you wait, the greater the chances are that the trip will be filled by the time you send in your registration. Please be mindful of the booking deadline of 60 days before the tour start date.
What if I become ill while travelling overseas?
If you become ill while travelling, your host will help you find an English speaking doctor and provide you with assistance. If you regularly take special medication, you may want to bring it with you. Most prescription and over the counter drugs are available in Hungary, but their names may be different.
Cell phone:
There are three mobile operators in Hungary (T-Mobile, Vodafone and Telenor) that offer both voice and broadband data (3G) communication service. If you are planning on using your US-base cellphone, you should check with your US provider whether your phone is compatible and what roaming charges you can expect to pay. In general, AT&T and T-Mobile phones will work fine in Hungary, but if your US-provider is either Verizon or Sprint, you will need to have a dual-mode (GSM + CDMA) phone. Regular Sprint or Verizon CDMA phone will not work anywhere in Europe.
Sales Tax:
The prices on all goods are inclusive of VAT (value added tax), so no sales tax is added to the price. If you are going to do some serious shopping, you may want to keep the receipts, so that you can re-claim the VAT tax at the airport before leaving.
Taxis:
There are many taxi companies in Budapest and the fares are significantly lower than in NYC. Here, it is cheaper if you call a taxi they will arrive in 5-10 minutes) than hailing a cab on the street. Your host will be happy to call a cab for you or give you a number to a reputable taxi company.
Electricity:
Just like in the rest of continental Europe, the currency is 220V (unlike 110V in the US) and you will need a small converter to plug in. You can borrow or buy one at the the hotel, if you don't have one already.
How do I book a tour?
The easiest way it to book our tours on our webpage with a credit card of your choice (we accept Visa, MasterCard and AmEx) or via PayPal. All you have to do is select the tour of interest and click on the 'Book Your Tour' button. You will need to provide us with your information and make a deposit at the time of the booking. If you are not comfortable with booking a tour on-line, you can always contact our office via phone or email.
What is your cancellation policy?
There is a booking deadline for each tour that is about 60 days in advance of the start of the tour. At the time of the booking you will need to provide us with a $1,000 deposit and the balance will need to be paid by the booking deadline. In case you need to cancel, up until the booking deadline, the cost is fully refundable (we charge a small administrative cancellation fee). After the booking deadline, the $1,000 deposit is non-refundable (it covers the non-refundable airfare costs) and the balance of the tour cost is refundable up to 1 month before the tour starts. In general, if you need to cancel within 1 month of the tour start date, the entire tour fee is non-refundable, unless we have a waiting list of other travelers interested in your tour. We encourage you to consider purchasing a travel cancellation insurance.
